This tutorial will cover the process of creating a lava texture from fractal noise, utilizing luma mattes to give it depth. Using Trapcode Particular we will create blazing embers in 3D space and heat haze. In Maya we will use simple geometry to create gaps in the ground for the lava to appear below.

In this tutorial we’ll use a color difference key to give our footage a ghost like appearance. CG bones will also be composited, as well as some fake wind using displacement maps.

In this tutorial, I will be sharing with you how to achieve 2D facial motion capture in After Effects. The technique involves acquiring motion data from dots on a face, and using that motion data to manipulate the position of puppet pins on an image that you want to animate. It’s a very useful way of quickly creating detailed animations, and characterizing inanimate objects, like the rock face in the intro. It’s also possible to do face replacement.

Use the new Camera Tracker in AE CS6 to 3D motion track your scene, then composite some elements in it to make a sort of Hologram. Using Trapcode Particular we make the hologram cloud which fits in with the 3D scene, then stick some green screen footage in it and BAM, insta-hologram! (Instagram?)

Today we’ll be turning an ordinary actor into the mouth of Sauron by enlarging the mouth and altering his complexion. Geometry tracking will also be used to composite a CG helmet onto their head.

This term’s background fundamentals is on Tech We Love: and we are starting by looking at Deep Compositing. The concept is closely aligned to that of Deep Shadows the hugely influential 2000 Pixar Siggraph paper by Tom Lokovic and Eric Veach. So much so that when we came to film some elements to help explain it this week – we used as the base of the shot a set of Siggraph Conference Proceedings (Ok so that is truly geek humor).
