I am continually asking professional photographers (and aspiring profession-
als), “To what extent are you willing to put yourself out in order to become
die best photographer that you can be? To what lengths are you willing to go
to create the best portrait that you can maker” The answer keeps coming
back, “Whatever it takes! I’m ready to go all the way.”

Any time you try to pose two or more people in a photograph and render them looking happy and relaxed, you’ll understand why professional portrait photographers are so well paid. Photographing portraits of groups is not easy. Many group portraits are family por-traits—records of happiness and togetherness. Taken every few years,the family portrait provides cherished memories of how the family looked “back then”and a fond record of the children’s growth.
Family groups taken in the home show the familiar warmth of home and, according to many, probably bring
the largest economic return. Outdoor family portraits are a close second, with the studio portrait usually ranking last in terms of popularity and sales.
When and why do people have a family portrait made?
Master photographer Robert Love says, “In our area, the number-one reason that clients call us to create a family portrait is because the complete family is getting together for a special occasion. Usually the parents have one or more grown children who don’t live at home anymore. More often than not, this person is married and has a family, as well. Now we have an opportunity to create a third-generation memento. With these extended families, we have photographed from eight to thirty people in one
image.”

It is no new observation that throughout the history of photography its practitioners have been segregated into one of two distinct disciplines, professional or fine art practices.
That this self-conscious distinction creates limitations for practitioners on both sides is evidenced by the large per-centage of fine artists who attempt more or less success-fully to support themselves in the professional fields and an equal percentage of professionals who vie for acceptance of their art work in galleries. Th e separation of photographic practices is perpetuated through a higher education sys-tem in which the overwhelming majority of photography programs emphasize one of the two disciplines: technical
education (the goal of which is to train students to become successful professional photographers) or fine art practices Preface (whose primary structure prepares students for success as fine artists).

Two years after the release of the first, Masters of Wedding Photography, we find ourselves gathering film cameras, lenses and other kit, stuffing gear into flight cases and checking in at the first of a plethora of airports: we’re off again!
